CHURCH BELLS

Church bells were first built in the region of Campania, Italy, from where they got their name. All Orthodox Churches have bells as they are an integral part of the Christian Faith. Bells do not always ring with the same rhythm and purpose.

The bells ring joyfully on the Eve and the Main day of a Despotic or Mother of God Feast, when the Saint of a parish celebrates, when the Bishop is going to visit, to minister and officiate, when the Praise to God is sung and also on our National Holidays.

On Good Friday the bells ring mournfully, sometimes they ring to announce extraordinary events such as natural disasters or when a faithful member of the parish passes away. Above all, however, the ringing of the bells symbolizes the voice of God and the Church calling the faithful to come to the Temple to pray, to rest mentally and spiritually and to earn their salvation.
