INCENSE – CAJION

The Censers we use in the Holy Temples are mobile metal vessels where the incense is burned and the priest incenses the Holy gifts, the icons and the faithful. They symbolize the human nature of Jesus Christ and the prayer of the faithful.

The censer consists of a metal vessel like a glass, in the lower part the coals are placed, and in the upper part it rests on four chains, each of which has three bells that symbolize the resounding preaching of Christian teaching.

The four chains symbolize the four Evangelists and the four Gospels and the twelve bells hanging from the chains symbolize the Twelve Apostles.

The Katzion is another type of censer in a special shape, of small size, and is used for incense in the services of the Bridegroom and during the reading of the Great or Royal Hours on Christmas Eve and Lights and Good Friday.
